What Is Considered A High Voltage Power Line?

Jul 5, 2022 | Power Lines

Have questions about the power lines on your property?

At Sturdy, we have your answers.

We sat down with our team to talk about some of the most frequently asked questions around high voltage power lines.

Discover all you need to know below:

What is a high voltage power line?

High voltage is used for bulk quantities of electric power and is known for delivering electricity over long distances. High voltage is required to reduce the amount of energy lost during the long distances travelled.

Unlike other energy sources, electricity can not be stored when unused.

Are all power lines high voltage?

The short answer is no. There are many types of power lines.

For example, residential and rural properties generally have a transformer, generally on a pole. The lines that feed into the transformer are classified as high voltage. After the lines leave the transformer and go to a person’s home, these lines are classified as secondary lines.

Another type of lines are underground lines, which some homeowners choose for aesthetic reasons.

What voltage is high voltage power lines?

By our trade, anything over 600 volts is considered high voltage. Generally, at Sturdy Power Lines, we work with 600 volts, 2,400 volts, and right up to 46,000 volts.

How do I know if my power line is high voltage?

High-voltage transmission lines are often quite obvious. They are normally made of really large steel towers.

What voltage are residential power lines?

Generally, residential power lines in Canadian homes are 120/240 volt.

Is it OK to live near high voltage power lines?

There are no known health risks that have been conclusively determined for those who live near high-voltage power lines.

However, you may hear a slight hum coming from voltage lines – which some people may find annoying.

How thick are high voltage power lines?

Power lines can be anything from the size of a pencil right up to almost two inches around. Any power lines that are underground are thicker as the cable has to be insulated.
